UNIT I

Structure of metals and crystalline solids

Classification of engineering materials, atomic structure, bonding types (metallic, ionic, covalent, van der Waals), crystal structures (BCC, FCC, HCP), crystallographic planes and directions, imperfections (point, line, surface defects), grain boundaries, grain size, solidification, metallography basics.

UNIT II

Phase diagrams and phase transformations

Gibbs phase rule, unary phase diagrams, binary phase diagrams, lever rule, tie-line rule, eutectic reactions, eutectoid reactions, peritectic reactions, iron–iron carbide diagram, TTT diagrams, CCT diagrams, nucleation, growth, pearlite, bainite, martensite, microstructure evolution, numerical problems.

UNIT III

Heat treatment and strengthening of materials

7 hours

Annealing, normalizing, hardening, tempering, carburizing, nitriding, flame hardening, induction hardening, heat treatment of alloy steels, heat treatment of cast irons, hardenability, quench test, grain size control, solid solution strengthening, cold work, recovery, recrystallization, grain growth, numerical problems.

UNIT IV

Mechanical behavior and failure of materials

Stress–strain behavior, elastic deformation, plastic deformation, hardness testing (Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers), tensile testing, impact testing, fatigue, creep, ductile fracture, brittle fracture, crack propagation, fractography, failure analysis, non-destructive testing techniques, numerical problems.

UNIT V

Engineering alloys, corrosion and emerging topics

Plain carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steels, gray cast iron, white cast iron, malleable cast iron, ductile cast iron, aluminum alloys, copper alloys, nickel alloys, titanium alloys, magnesium alloys, corrosion types (galvanic, pitting, stress corrosion), shape memory alloys, electrochemical corrosion, cathodic protection, protective coatings, powder metallurgy, nanomaterials, applications of nanomaterials.
